So, let’s catch up shall we? So this weekend…I think on Friday actually, I bought four more wood panels. I have a lot of ideas but no planning for any of them…story of my life…Something I am noticing in my work at animation Mentor is a severe lack of planning. I gotta work on that. I just am a very…I can’t think of the word, but I like to work it out in my head, which sometimes doesn’t really come out well but I like it. I have 2 lovely ladies interested in being models for me, but I have to come up with the ideas fully.
Today is the new start of Class 2 for Animation Mentor which means a new mentor, new students(well except my buddy Ting!). My new Mentor is Shaun Freeman and I am looking forward to the new term! Whoo Hoo!
And since last week had no homework, I managed do do a little bit of painting. I laid down an initial Grisailles layers without any feet and hands. Here it is. Adios!
Couple of quick things. Sorry I haven’t been posting, just been sorta busy. My Daily Sketching Idea has failed as I have not drawn in days, doh!. It’s ok, I would rather draw occassionally and really sit and focus on making it good than just sketching something quick to keep my daily quota.
So, on Sunday was my friend Josh Batt’s Pre-Deployment BBQ. Josh will be going to Iraq quite soon for 7 months, so we all got together and it was very nice to see a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while. I’ll be praying for Josh’s safe return.
Last night I did a quick Impramtura layer for 2 panels. They are tinted quite yellow now, one more than the other as I was running out of paint on the second one haha. I found a great website demonstrating the 7 layer flemish technique at www.artpapa.com. The Free Pink Rose tutorial is great. That’s how I want to paint, so I will try doing it that way…Now to just think of what I want to paint haha. So many ideas, not enough preparation for any of them, but I have such a drive to paint right now. I suppose I could have a go at a still life…we will see. I hope to maybe get started on Thursday as I did a very thin impramtura so I believe it will dry very quickly.
Lastly, The next video for the Biped Rigging Series on Cineversity is up. This video is on Mirroring the Taquito Rig. I hope you enjoy it. I’ve been working on the weighting tutorial today and it’s tough. I’m not great at weighting myself, and the model is fairly low poly and a simple rig which makes weighting somewhat problematic. i just hope the tips I present are useful, helpful, and that you learn something. After this one get finished and uploaded there will be 1 more video to conclude the series, and then I will move on to some other things…I only have 1 tutorial planned for after this series but I don’t know what I will do when I run out of ideas
Lastly(for real this time), Last night was my last Q&A for my first class at Animation Mentor. Many thanks to my classmates, and to Joe Mandia my mentor for everything. It was cool, everyone was real cool, hope to see you all around the campus next class
Some new posts. Hope everyone had a good St. Patty’s Day, I didn’t get to have a drop of the craythur at all, sadly. Oh well. Onto new news…
CINEVERSITY PRIORITIES TUTORIAL ONLINE
I know it’s been a while for some of you folks enjoying my Biped Rigging Series on Cineversity, things fell through and I ended up having to do the Priorities video myself which required my own learning of priorities in order to try and explain them. Anywho, it is now available for viewing at Cineversity so go enjoy that one.
Below are some sketches I’ve been doing. The first two are from the last two days, a couple doodles for this week’s Stu Pose at AM.
Below is a sketch I took a bit further because I liked the idea of it. I stopped before going too far. I may return to it sometime.
Last night I got to talk to my friend Karli and it was nice to tell her all the crazy painting ideas I have because she is interested in it and thinks they are cool. Almost motivates me to get cracking on some of them, except I’m just really FN tired lately, haha. Maybe tonight I will start one…that’d be cool.
First off, for all you guys waiting on the rest of the Taquito Videos, here’s an update. Kai, unfortunately is quite busy these days, so he is unable to do the Video. Thankfully, the priorities for Taquito are quite simple. So simple, that I can explain them . So I have gone ahead and recorded the video for that one. Once that gets the A-OK I can get moving on the remaining 2-3 videos of Mirroring, Weighting, and Preparing for Animation. Be forewarned, The weighting video will not be very in depth. Weighting is a pain, and it’s quite boring, and it would make you catch qwertyitis(falling asleep with your head on the keyboard). So, it will not tell you HOW to weight, but it will teach you(hopefully) a few things that you can use to weight your characters, some tips and workflow suggestions and such. The Animation one will be similar, just showing you some tips I use for preparing for animation that hopefully you guys will find useful. After that, I think I have a couple more tutorials in my brain to try out, but the Taquito Series should be done soon. I will try to get the priorities A-OK’d this week but those in charge of that are quite busy this week and next. But I will pester them for you all .
And lastly, here is today’s daily sketch. Done, probably in 10 minutes or so. This weeks pose at AM is Balance. And I immediately thought of a meditation pose(actually, I thought of me on a unicycle, ontop of a ball holding a pair of scales, but it didn’t pan out ). So I just took it a a limit, kept it loose and tried to add some color for mood. I hope you enjoy.
I’d like to start doing a sketch a day. It sucks that I have not been sketching at all lately unless I have to(for Animation Mentor for example). I was once a halfway decent sketcher. Now, I suck at it. To grow as an Animator and an Artist, I plan to try and post a sketch a day when possible(ie when I’m available to sketch). So doodles and then some will be going on.
This could in theory help me flesh out some ideas too which will be cool, but I’m just going to try to draw whatever I want. So…yeah, stay tuned for that.
First, since this is probably the most obvious, The website has a new look. It’ll hold for a while I think. There’s still some stuff that may get changed around but overall we’re set for now.
On the topic of the website, I believe all of the fine art stuff is uploaded now. So that’s good to have that done for you all to check out. I think I will switch them from Galleries to individual images. So it’s sort of done, sort of…not.
Today I did something I have not done for…gosh, I think like 7 months, which is sad. Today I Gesso’d two panels to use for painting later. It was nice to finally do some of that. One of the panels is warped, so I gotta fix that, oh well. I think I will get a 4th one next weekend. I want to restart this painting of Josh and his wife, but we will see. Josh goes to Iraq in a week I think so It’d be nice to have it done by then, but I don’t think it will be. I may be my toughest critic, but the quality isn’t good. But Maybe I will just sand it down(something I didn’t dowhile Gessoing which was a mistake).
I have been reading a lot of painting stuff on the Venetian and other master’s techniques. So I think I want to really try to get that thing going. But I think I might just start with a different painting, but I want to do it right. Get a solid underpainting, and get the whites, then the darks and just work my way from there. The book I’ve been reading is called “Traditional Oil Painting” and it is packed with a lot of information. I stil have a frame for canvas that has not been stretched or anything…I have to work on that too. So many paintings, not enough ideas.
Oh lastly, I do have 1 idea. Last year I painted a self portrait and cut it into little squares, which I liked because I kind of think Self Portraits or a tad self-indulgent or pompous you know? But I liked the idea of taking a portrait of myself, and making it FUN(It was fun because you could spin the Squares and break up the image so you couldn’t tell it was me). So I decided I would do a self portrait every year and do something fun with it(or at least try to). It would be a good way to see how I grow and evolve both in life, and in my painting skills. So I have another fun Square piece to do and tomorrow I will take some pictures to use for the painting, then have a go.
Lastly, I have lost my idea notepad someplace! FML. I can only remember a couple of them. I think I will head down to CVS in a little bit to go get a new one…well maybe tomorrow since it’s Midnight. I need to quickly so I don’t forget all of my ideas, Grrrr. I can only think of a few of the ideas. I am quite bummed about this. I hope I just lost it in my room somewherem but we shall see.
This week’s assignment at AM is to finish up our Walks and do a pose of Stu showing that he is concerned. The walk is kicking my ass quite a bit. First my walk was looking too much like a sneak because he was leaning forward/back too much. He was also going down too much on it’s Down extreme. so it was almost like he was doing lunges or something. So I restarted and now I think the walk is better, but the knees are poppin like crazy, so I need to fix that, but I can’t get it right. They look like they are like vibrating as if there were some sort of priorities problem.
So I’ve stopped for now and begun thinking about the Stu Pose for this week. Concern is a hard one. It resembles a lot of other emotions and body positisons. To me, it seems to have a lot of what you can convey through concern, you need Eyes. Take like someone who just got some bad news. If it were me, I would probably sit way down in a chair, like a slouch, blank gaze, with maybe my eyebows up where the two meet. Now eliminate all of that facial stuff. Does the pose still convey Concern, or maybe just a slouch?
Take another pose. Someone is looking through the bills, wondering how they are going to make it. They open an envelope, and they see a charge that they know they don’t have the money for. They put their elbow on the table and theyre head in theyre hand(like right up at the temple.), brows raised slightly and the lips are tight and raised a bit(like the bottom lip is pushing the upper lip up). Now, take out that facial stuff, what do you see, concern, contemplation, or boredom? That type of pose is interesting because depending on where the hand is positioned, that helps convey the type of pose a little bit better. Hand up at the temple is more concerned. Hand covering the chin shows more of a contemplative look, Chin on top of the hand shows more boredom. You could go even further. An open hand over the Mouth with the fingers close together shows more concern, like a gasp. But spread out it’s again more of a bored or contemplative pose. Below are some quick shots. They all kind of read bored because I was trying really hard to not do any sort of facial stuff with them. But rest assured, a little raise of the eyebrows or tightening of the lips I could easily make every one of these something other than boredom.
So since there are so many poses RESEMBLING concern but without the “look(ie the face)” of concern, it becomes a bit more difficult. Also since Stu doesnt have any fingers, that sure doesn’t help either. So I think my plan will be to come up with a scenario that when you look at it, it makes you immediately thing “This guy is concerned”. Maybe like he just noticed there’s no TP, or maybe he’s about to go skydiving or something, i dunno. But that’s the plan….now I just need to make it…
